Japanese$$

Nestled on the corner of a modern building you'll find the newly minted and heavingly popular Aka Siro. It's a slender, simple and stylish neighbourhood Japanese serving brilliant-value meals like the enormous(-ly popular) ton-katsu teishoku, a crisp, crumbed, deep-fried pork loin with a tangy, almost boozy sauce. Fried tofu, sweet potato and eggplant simmered in miso is warming and restorative, while the small daily side plates - perhaps ribbons of pickled cucumber with white anchovies - are bright and effervescent. Service is sweet but can be intermittent when busy. Enforced sharing of tiny tables means intimate conversations are off the menu.
