Axil is a smooth operation in a comfortable, sleek warehouse-style space. Quality green coffee beans proceed from back-room roaster (peek through the window) to cupping room to your table via practised baristas who serve some of Melbourne’s best filter and espresso brews. The kitchen follows suit, with smart takes on contemporary cafe food like a moist, warm and nicely flaky ham hock terrine with sauteed mushrooms and a poached egg perked up with spicy tomato kasoundi; or a stack of French toast – maybe gingerbread, maybe brioche – topped with rhubarb and apple or perhaps maple-poached pear.
