French

On the basis of longevity alone, Baguette is worth a visit: it has been feeding the city for more than three decades, a remarkable feat in a fickle industry. The fact that the restaurant has kept with the times and maintained its popularity speaks of both intuition and a great deal of hard work by its owners. The decor has been given regular makeovers and its current incarnation is fresh and contemporary. The French theme peppers rather than defines the menu with the likes of pissaladiere, steak with cafe de Paris butter, salads both Lyonnaise and Nicoise and other French bric-a-brac appearing. There is also a smattering of Italian and more generic Euro-bistro stuff. Francophiles will love the splendid, and overly ample, steak tartare; the simple, traditional chevre and leek tart ('au gratin' to a perfect smidge before melting point) and of course the equally traditional creme brulee. Service is smooth and assured.
