Hidden down a lane off a lane and with three bar stools and leaning capacity for about 15, darkly Europhilic Bar Americano could easily plunge towards terminal pretentiousness. But a dedication to quality booze, well honed cocktail-making skills and old-school hospitality instead make it one of the city's most interesting watering holes. The cocktails keep to Clover Club/Americano classics and the wine list consists of one red, one white and one sparkling. Snacks are restrained and grown-up - mackerel on toast is a favourite - and the general vibe makes everybody feel a little more sophisticated than they really are.
