Barney Allen's

Modern Australian$$

It's hard to pigeonhole the clientele at Barney Allen's: you might rub shoulders with a French wine negociant, a couple on a second date or a homeward-bound office worker enjoying a well-deserved beer. Posters and sporting memorabilia- collected by part-owner Iain 'Huey' Hewitson- decorate the low-lit room with its big St Kilda bar. It matches the unpretentious yet elegant food, from rotisserie chicken basted with lemon and garlic oil and served on creamy mash to hangover-busting sangers to Asian-style salmon carpaccio. The Barney Allen burger is a mainstay and with good reason: a cricket ball-sized hunk of meat with house relish is guaranteed to satisfy.
