Beatrix

Contemporary$$

Get elbow-to-elbow with fellow appreciators of this very fine, teeny-tiny cafe, a light-filled space with floor-to-ceiling windows. A penchant for old-school eggbeaters (donations accepted, apparently) is a reference to the baked goods on offer, like jam-laced lamingtons with scorched coconut sprinkles. In the savoury stakes, Beatrix has nailed a menu that's compact and attentive to detail, with simple, exquisite rolls like the 'beggbie': grilled Otway bacon, a fried egg, beetroot, apple, aioli and rocket; there's a vegetarian incarnation, too. The granola- nuts and oats soaked in apple juice then toasted- is pure delight. And for cyclists, there's a 50-cent coffee discount.
