Beatrix

Contemporary$$

Red velvet layer, fluffy lemon chiffon, cocoa angel-food and rich, salted caramel slice: Beatrix takes the cake for its gorgeous selection of bakes. But this dinky, corner cafe, flooded with natural light (and decorated with dangling eggbeaters) also has a short menu of sandwiches; they change weekly (and have cute names, like ‘the plugger’ and ‘the chairman’), but they’re always stuffed with top-notch produce. Try a hearty mushroom with caramelised onion and tangy goat’s cheese, or maybe a BLT in summer. Specials might include tender poached chicken with celery, apple, pinenuts and mustard. Excellent, smooth coffee (by Allpress) is the icing on the cake.
