Bhaji On The Beach

Indian$$

Yes! There are bhaji here, the spiced onion rings dipped in chickpea batter and deep-fried to a pleasing crisp, drizzled with a date and tamarind sauce. But the namesake of this small diner on the busy Newport strip is just the beginning. The southern Indian food is rich with aromatic seasonings, fresh herbs and the regional lentils, fish and tomato. Masala dosa, the crisp rice and lentil crepe stuffed with spiced potato, is pitch perfect. Fresh chopped spinach in the chicken keerai adds another fresh element to a light cumin and ginger-fragrant curry. There's hot if you want it, too. The prawn garlic masala with a capsicum, clove and coriander sauce has a good kick.
