Cosy Bistro Flor exemplifies the great little local, with terrific food, attentive service, good value and that feeling of being let into a club of happy, well-fed and cared-for customers, even if only for one night. Original terrazzo floors, modern art and small wooden tables may evoke a Paris bistro, but this was once a typical corner store and its creeper-entwined exterior with iron lacework is quintessential Carlton. Starters include wafer-thin house-cured salmon with croutons, creamy wasabi and avocado, and a special of delicate gazpacho, speckled with crab and a hint of chilli. Subtlety is replaced by full-on flavour in the main plates - think soft gnocchi paired with rich braised rabbit, spiked with black olives and rosemary and the tang of salted ricotta, or tender pork neck, its richness offset by smoky eggplant and pickled crabapple. House-made cannoli, the crunchy pastry encasing smooth banana and mascarpone, will have you feeling the love till the last.
