Bistro Goemon

Japanese$$

Tokyo-style smarts in downtown Elsternwick, Bistro Goemon’s modern Japanese menu and neat dining room with natty octagonal front window make a fine package. Typical of Tokyo restaurants, Goemon mixes East with West in dishes like seared tuna slices with a nori skin and fine breadcrumb crust drizzled with mild gorgonzola sauce. Cheese and fish? It’s an unexpectedly good dish. Crab agedashi tofu is a golden, crisp fried square of tofu in milky dashi stock almost solid with picked crab, and stunning California rolls come with prawns, avocado and cucumber, draped in salmon. Brown-rice tea brulee makes a cracking finish.
