Sometimes Bondi can be too casual for its own good. You could walk straight past this small fish and chipper on your way down the hill to the beach without looking twice. But look twice and you'll notice the sleek, white interior, the dozen wines on the shelf, and the presence of Hirofumi Fujita behind the sushi counter. His sushi is traditionally garnished, the fish precisely cut to achieve elegant long tails draped over the seasoned rice - and because you're in a fish shop, a prawn tempura roll is sent out still hot and crisp inside. As for the fish and chips, the (sustainable) NZ hoki fingerlings are lightly coated in crisp, saffron-gold batter, chips are excellent, and there are always a few other options such as salt-and-pepper cuttlefish or snapper pie. It's simple stuff - but that's exactly what you want when you're sitting on a stool in an open window with a glass of sauvignon blanc and a view of Bondi Beach.
