Bourke Street Bakery

Little wonder there are queues for those towering slices of carrot cake dolloped with frosting and gilded with sugar, the ginger brulee tarts and beef brisket pies. The Potts Point branch of Surry Hills' famous bakery now has a life of its own, its gorgeous semi-subterranean industrial space lined with long wooden benches and mirrored walls. Single Origin Roasters coffee ($3.30) is strong on fruit and acidity, as if they knew we'd be scoffing something sweet with it. By night, the curved zinc counter does a U-turn into a wine-bar called After Hours, which is when we'll be back.
