Captain Melville

$$

The latest incarnation of this bluestone boozer is pretty hip-tastic: mason jars, muted tones and architectural angles. There’s a late licence on weekends and a sleek, occasionally pricey mod-pub menu with an American twang. You’ll find quality small plates such as a brisket bagel with horseradish cream or a fabulously fancy dagwood dog. Fall-apart beef short rib with house-made barbecue sauce and an outrageous side of mac ’n’ cheese is a highlight alongside glammed-up standards such as chicken parma and beef burger. Desserts such as lemon curd with soft gingerbread, meringue and mandarin display the Captain’s lofty ambitions.
