Cattivo

Italian

There it sits in the counter display, a big jaunty red pepper, flaunting its filling of provolone, cannellini beans, rice and herbs. At such a reasonable price, could it be as good as it looks? It can. Add salad, brimming with grains, spiced almonds and chickpeas, then tuck into a home-made bombolone (jam or custard-filled doughnut) and still get change from $20. Everything’s house-made, including a baked pasta slab with tomatoes, chilli sausage, pork and fennel. What’s not to love? Maybe the nondescript decor, but at these prices you could afford to take them a bunch of flowers.
