If one is inclined to come over all Marie Antoinette, a visit to Cheeky Chocolate is entirely recommended.
The fit-out is Moulin Rouge-meets-1920s-salon for leisured ladies who yearn to lie on a day bed and be spoon-fed decadent desserts by handsome men. It's all plush velvets, chesterfield couches, heavy curtains and clusters of glittering chandeliers. There's also a painting of a boop-boop-a-doop lady on the wall who you just know would never count calories or be seen without her face on.
Jennifer Dib, who opened Cheeky Chocolate three months ago, had not run a patisserie cafe before but it had always been her dream. To make it happen she courted dessert maestro Adriano Zumbo - the man who inspired thousands of home chefs to tackle towering croquembouches and inspired Sydney's love affair with the macaron - for three years. They became friends and Zumbo has created the menu of desserts and cakes. Sinfulness is the theme, with desserts ($18) such as Will You Pash or Dash and Read My Lips or Kiss My Cheeks. A glass cabinet also holds cheesecakes, tarts and cakes.
Choosing proves an awfully difficult task. It would be great if there was a tasting plate so you could try a bit of everything. Each dessert is a work of art. The profiteroles are perfectly crunchy, filled with velvety ice-cream and rich chocolate sauce. Chocolate sticky date pudding is comforting and entirely delicious and the It's Bombastic Totally Fantastic is an explosion of orange and chocolate.
The coffee is strong and well-made, though the price tag is hefty ($4.90). There are also thickshakes, some delightful-sounding cocktails and wine and bubbles by the glass.
Plates scraped, we can't help picking out four macarons to take away. The idea is they will be gifts but whether they made it home, well, our lips are sealed.
