Remember when you were a teenager and you wanted to paint your bedroom black, black and black (and your folks said no)? Joseph Haddad of Caffenatics has done just that with his Brunswick warehouse-roastery. The black is relieved by dark-stained chipboard and chrome highlights creating a flashy Eurochic mood. The menu riffs on that, with cafe brunches, salads and sandwiches given cheffy flavour jolts. So, French toast is gingerbread with a vanilla cream cheese filling; while crunchy, smoky ham-hock croquettes prop on a plate of cauliflower puree with wilted spinach and a poached egg atop.
