Contemporary

This 1950s era warehouse is seriously cool, what with the stripped-back steel piping, paint-splattered floor and stock room lights. Yet there's enough warmth from the sunflowers in vases on the tables, the collectable teaspoons and staff who are on first name basis with the regulars, to feel welcome. Something of a shrine to the bean, Double Roasters does small batch, artisanal blends that are sold in cafes around Sydney. A piccolo ($3) is gutsy and robust, with a mighty kick up the aftertaste. The sandwiches are just plain delicious, and it would take more willpower than we have to refuse that peanut butter chocolate brownie.
