East Village Balmain

Good Food hatGood Food hat17/20

The old Commercial Hotel has re-emerged as the East Village Balmain. The new look is basic bright and breezy white walls and pleasingly dark wood. There is a grand selection of boutique beers, a long and eclectic wine list, impeccable service and great food. A starter of zucchini flowers with three cheeses (parmesan, ricotta and gorgonzola) is sublime, pork spareribs with cherry tomatoes are fall-apart gorgeous, and we want to lick the plate the spicy chicken wings came on. A main course of plump Spencer Gulf mussels (one kilo) in a tomato, chilli, garlic and ginger broth is a beauty, as is a braised oxtail and red wine pie.
