En Izakaya

Japanese$$

Relaxed chatter, clinking glasses and the gentle clack of chopsticks provide the soundtrack at this skinny, timber-rich den. En's small, creative dishes are designed for sharing: things like 'okara', a soybean mash with white miso mayonnaise, carrot and green beans, and salmon and soybean tempura fritters. Watch for specials such as barbecued ox tongue marinated in honey, sake and chilli. Bargain-hunters drop in for a lunch special – three items from the evening menu, plus rice and salad, for around $17. Though not listed on the menu, ask about desserts – green tea tiramisu and black sesame ice-cream surprise and delight.
