Contemporary

Era conducts itself with quiet distinction and old school hospitality; a veritable paragon of respectability and reliability in the volatile restaurant world. The dining room is more upmarket than either its 'bistro' moniker or casual entry bar area would suggest; the decor features a neutral palette with carpet underfoot and mood lighting above. Amicable waiters are happy to share their personal menu favourites and proffer wine matches from an exciting list. Chef Marcus Turner's menu exhibits classic roots, with dishes produced with finesse, although occasionally with too much happening on the plate. No such qualms with the suckling pig, however, served with exemplary crackling and mustard fruits. Likewise the rosy pink duck breast served on crinkly kale with a textbook star anise jus. Making a welcome comeback on the dessert list is the retro fave, rum baba; here served with a pineapple consomme and a goat's curd sorbet with just enough savoury barnyard to cut through the sweetness.
