Since the Flying Squirrel flew out, Fat Rupert’s has quickly settled in to this narrow corner space. The place features the usual hipster accoutrements (op-shop knick-knacks, kids’ books, cocktails in jars), but its relaxed, tongue-in-cheek approach is as refreshing as the sea air. Brekkie (such as ‘fat quinoa’ porridge) and lunch – which features pulled pork and fried chicken – happen only on weekends, while evenings are all about sharing: perhaps charred prawns dipped into mint and coriander yogurt or thin-sliced wagyu skirt steak on tomato-braised green beans. There are boutique beers to wash it down, plus a brief but eager-to-please wine list.
