It’s probably the best salt-and-pepper calamari of any pub in Sydney. Whole squid, spindly tentacles and all, chopped into a variety of shapes and lightly battered; they’re zippy little guys, and the minty plate-mate salad does everything right. All the classics are a cut above and avoid the stodge of some public bars. The cheeseburger is a plump fellow and can be eaten with one hand, while the pork belly roast is a monolith of meat and crackling. Throw in table tennis, a beer garden, rotating craft beer taps and a NSW-only wine list and you’ve got Glebe’s best watering hole. Pinball machines, colouring-in supplies and good $10 kids’ meals get the junior nod of approval, too.
