The food at Ginger & Spice is an exercise in the extremes of salty, spicy and sweet, in the best possible way. Keep serviettes and an ice-cold beer at hand and prepare for a punch of heat and flavour. Ikan bilis (deep-fried anchovies) are addictively salty and spicy. Dip the crisp, oily roti prata (flatbread) into a thin but richly flavoured curry and try to stop at one piece. Belachan dishes are a Nonya speciality, as in green beans stir-fried with the deep, roasted notes of the signature fermented shrimp paste. It's a walk on the mild side in comparison with otak otak - two kaffir lime-rich parcels of fish cooked in banana leaves. It's sensational, as is sago pudding for dessert. Submerged in warm coconut milk and with the golden syrup-like flavours of palm sugar, the slippery sweet sago balls are like a warm, comforting hug. The decor may lack impact, but the food makes this place worth crossing town for.
