Japanese

The famously quirky citizens of Harajuku, a neighbourhood in Tokyo, put the ‘pop’ into pop culture, and this new izakaya follows suit, despite coming to Sydney via Brisbane, not Tokyo. Brace yourself for the ‘irasshaimase’ welcome from staff; it’s surely Sydney’s most boisterous. Seats at the bar offer the best view of the gyoza chef. The dumplings come pan-fried and sticky-bottomed or steamed; ready for dipping into vinegar, soy and chilli oil. Try agedashi tofu topped with dancing bonito flakes, and tender pork belly kakuni with caramelised top, before going back to gyoza for dessert. Kirin beer on tap is a bonus.
