Horoki

Japanese$$

Horoki is like a wacky Japanese anime: what the cuisine lacks in storyline it compensates for with novelty and flavour. This intimate venue, tucked in a quiet laneway, has somewhat faded decor, but its quirky pan-Asian-Euro share plates fly out the door like superheroes. Try baked octopus segments pasted in garlic butter, pink slices of duck breast over soft eggplant with liberal squirts of honeyed soy mayo, or thick savoury pancakes studded with prawns and calamari. Smallish serves means it's hard to sock your appetite on a budget, but a good selection of sakes and delicately scented green tea is a bonus.
