Plenty of fancy new cafes have set up shop nearby, but this old girl has staying power. Pull up a pew in the pokey, wood-panelled room and scan the blackboard menus overhead. A shiny red La Marzocco machine pumps out espresso and a shoe-box sized kitchen tackles the rest. Breakfast includes fruit-filled porridge and poached eggs on almond tarator with bacon, pearl barley tabbouleh and grilled asparagus (skip the toast, you won’t need it). Most lunches are hand-held - two thick slices of sourdough filled with pink roast lamb, beetroot and haloumi will fuel the rest of your day.
