There’s nothing like a red-and-white chequered tablecloth to really make you feel like you’re in Italy. At Il Gondoliere, you’re not far from it, with effusive Italian regularly heard through the kitchen walls. The epitome of cheap and cheerful, massive bowls of steaming spaghetti bolognese and puttanesca arrive alongside an equally generous bowl of grated parmesan cheese. Weekends see families arrive early to nab one of the few seats in this tiny joint, while couples and groups usually arrive for the later sitting with plenty of vino in hand. Fun, no frills, gutsy cuisine. Che bello!
