Good Food hat15/20

If this feels like a step back in time, remember Jonah's is an 80-year-old institution. The Pacific Ocean views, the slightly retro interior (silver columns, pastel shades) and the destination dining vibe contribute to the timeless charm of an otherwise thoroughly modern experience. Kindly service is far from fine-diner stiff; the wine list is fascinating; and the menu ticks all the contemporary boxes with quality ingredients (mostly seafood-focused) and exemplary technique. From the complimentary canape to a slate plate of petits fours, there's serious detail in every dish. Only a slightly leathery baked-to-order chestnut dessert souffle let the side down. Start with surf 'n' turf scallops with jamon and duck sausage on silverbeet, or perhaps a sweet morsel of snow crab with caviar on a round of Russian salad. The flavours intensify with main courses: ocean trout on lime-laced quinoa with tapenade and olives; or just-cooked Murray cod on a gorgeous puree of parsley and shellfish mariniere.
