K on Hay

K on Hay in East Perth.

Mum and I had a lovely Saturday evening out at K on Hay, a casual café-style restaurant in East Perth serving modern Australian cuisine.

The large dining room had a bright, family-dining feel which was adjacent to a small terraced area outside, which I imagine would be filled with café-goers during the day.

Our waiter was a pleasant young guy from Brazil, who looked after us well throughout the evening.

Sammy de la Cruz loved the lamb.

Plagued by an inability to decide on our entrees - as there was a number of appetising dishes on the menu - we chose to share two to start, the drunken prawns and the seared scallops.

The servings were huge. The table next to us commented on how amazing they looked and how each would have sufficed as a main meal.

The prawns were cooked perfectly in a creamy garlicky sauce and served on a bed of jasmine rice. We particularly enjoyed the scallops, but I thought their flavour was a little lost in the accompaniment (a spinach, pinenut and bacon salad, topped with a creamy dressing), which overpowered the dish.

The wine list was brief, but being lovers of red wine, we decided on the Pepperjack Shiraz, which we enjoyed.

For main course, we had the dukkah-crusted lamb rump. It arrived on a bed of mashed potato, served with a red wine jus, sugar snap peas, balsamic beetroot and topped with a confit tomato.

I have to emphasise how utterly delightful the lamb was. It was perfectly cooked and melted in my mouth.

The rest of the dish had too many flavours going on, it seemed like they were trying to incorporate Middle-Eastern influences into traditional English flavours, with a little bit of Mediterranean, which didn't really work for me.

Although lovely as an individual element, I thought the balsamic beetroot didn't really complement the dish and the mashed potato was a little bland.

We were both full but there was always room for dessert, and Mum couldn't go past the chocolate fondant - she also fancied the crème caramel, which I agreed to share without too much persuasion. Two double espressos helped to balance out the sweets.

Both desserts were artfully presented and looked absolutely delicious. The crème caramel was nice if not a little eggy, but the chocolate fondant was lovely, with just the right amount of goo inside.

K on Hay was great value for money with a family atmosphere – the restaurant was bright, the servings were huge and the service was unrefined but forgivable as the staff were attentive and pleasant.
