Malaysian$$

Nestled under an apartment block, Kaki Lima is easy to overlook. But this clean and cosy Malaysian eatery lures everyone from homesick students to large families celebrating birthdays to romantic couples. A rustic whole fish curry with okra has a beautifully tweaked sour tamarind sauce while sambal petai udang (stink beans, chilli and prawns) is a harmonic trinity of South-East Asian ingredients. The classics evoke memories of Malay hawker food, with beef and chicken satay served with cubes of cucumber and pressed rice and, yes, the flaky-yet-puffy roti canai is one of Sydney's best.
