Kampong Boy

Malaysian$$

This sleepy Malay cafe specialises in classic makan fare but with a precision more at home in the city. The vibe is relaxed, with old town Penang touches and chunky, dark wood tables. Food arrives in a flash, ferried by chilled-out staff. All the favourites are here, from crisp-fried chicken wings to tangy rojak salad and fragrant kaffir lime-heavy beef rendang paired with nasi lemak. House-made pickles and sambal are particularly impressive. After 2.30pm on weekends they serve Malay afternoon tea with a pared-back menu that includes kaya toast - a sweet, eggy, coconutty treat.
