Kappaya Japanese Soul Food Cafe

This bento-box-sized cafe has soul. With soaring ceilings, distressed walls and earthenware made by local artists, it's all about being Zen at Kappaya. 'Meal deals' highlight the brown rice onigiri- choose your filling from seven options, including grilled salmon, pickled vegies or the knockout walnut with sweetened miso, before it's wrapped in a sleeve of nori. Then choose another dish- perhaps steamed chicken, baked and steamed tofu disguised as quiche or a crisp counterpoint of tempura shredded vegies served like a slice of pizza. Lunch comes with a tart cabbage salad and, if you like, a white nutty miso soup or an artfully decadent grapefruit mousse.
