Eastern European

This atmospheric, exposed brick bakehouse is a great place to tap into your inner child, as you peek into the long glass counters at the slabs (yes, slabs) of cake, trays of sweet roulades and savoury burekas. The kurtoskalacs, or Hungarian chimney cakes, are the house specialty, the pastry rolled around and around a wooden rolling pin, coated in ladlefuls of butter and sugary topping, and baked in a special oven. The coffee is yet more performance art; a Mecca Espresso flat white ($3.50) treated seriously in its own right and not just as counterpoint to the excellent cinnamon and chocolate brioche babka.
