French

It's a sign of the times that Kings Cross can now support a cafe/shop that specialises in French tartines (open sandwiches) and 18th century chandeliers.La Croix's shades of ivory, cream and alabaster are a world away from the more colourful side of the neighbourhood. Annie Wilkes (of Parterre Garden fame) and Glenda Hampton-Kalyk's concept includes a salon-style cafe, just the spot for perching with a full-bodied and caramelly flat white ($3.50) while you ponder whether to go for the vine tomato tartine with avocado salad, lime and basil or toast with aromatic mixed berry jam. Or that 18th century chandelier.
