Perched streetside next to Luxe's bar, which changes colour like a mood ring; this could be the best people-watching spot in town. Bifold glass doors connect diners with the buzz of James Street; inside it's an industrial chocolate box of fudge walls, gilded wallpaper and steel supports framing high ceilings. An excellent beer list includes gems from around the world, or sink into a cushioned banquette for fare that's mostly made to share. There's skill behind lightly deep-fried slices of salmon - still lush and creamy in the middle - fanned over a delicate wasabi mayonnaise. Risotto balls conceal oozy nuggets of goat's cheese; a puddle of bright pesto keeps you reaching for more. Generous curls of salt and pepper calamari needed longer in the fryer and Thai spring rolls burst with chicken but lack flavour. An apple and almond-cream tart is pleasing but was overwhelmed by a strong salt-caramel ice-cream. Friendly service and helpful suggestions ensure you'll make that movie next door.
