Maddox

Cafe$$

Part of Sydney Road’s inexorable move upmarket, Maddox exudes utilitarian glamour with its raw wood, bare bricks and gleaming light fittings. Seating’s cosy in the clattery front room with open kitchen (it’s quieter out back). The signature brekkie of buttered eggs on Turkish bread with spiced yoghurt, pink onions, chilli and mint is Mid-East-tinged simplicity; for something heartier, a black-bean and pork sausage stew is enriched by a perfectly poached egg perched atop. Lunch specials are delightfully unpredictable: perhaps Italian-style beef ribs with polenta, or Thai beef salad. And Maddox can bake: try toasted apple-pie bread.
