Mamak

Malaysian$$

Mamak’s queue comes with its own entertainment: a roti chef performing magic tricks in the front window. As you wait for a table at this ever-busy Malaysian diner, you can watch a pale lump of dough being twisted and folded into flaky golden layers, sometimes interleaved with red onions or egg, sometimes transformed into sweet cones with ice-cream. But wait. There’s more. Homesick expats fall upon nasi lemak (coconut rice) with sambal, fried anchovies, peanuts and cucumber, marinated fried chicken, charry satay skewers and sweet coffee with frothy ‘pulled’ milk. Service is brisk, but you won’t mind when you’re eating.
