Mappen

Japanese

It’s a queue-order-sit-eat kind of place – and the regimented routine works well here. The long lunchtime queue moves swiftly, dishes are served quickly, and surprisingly everyone finds a seat. Bukkake noodles is the must-get dish; go large or small, choose either thick ribbons of starchy udon or the thinner buckwheat soba variety, then go crazy with the toppings. Runny egg is a delightfully gooey addition to mix into noodles, while chilli pork is enjoyably piquant. Crisp tempura sides are a necessity, especially the sweet potato. The self-service cafeteria set-up makes it easy to go overboard, but it’s so cheap it hardly matters.
