Mazzitelli feels like either an Italian theme restaurant or an ode to old Roma but, either way, it's an easy place to enjoy traditional Italian food with a savvy Melbourne twist. Sit at street level in the lee of hanging salamis and within earshot of the steady pop of prosecco corks, or head to the mezzanine, where it's cosier and candlelit. Eat dishes like pert and pretty octopus carpaccio with parsley, lemon and crisp breadcrumbs; risotto redolent of mushrooms and the milky funk of pecorino; a substantial pork scaloppine with retro marsala sauce and a profusion of peas; and daily-changing dishes based on hand-rolled pasta. Still got space in the dessert stomach for something more? The tiramisu is a reminder of why the dish is such a classic. The main thrust is that Mazzitelli is here when you want it: whether for a lazy, hazy breakfast, lunchtime piadini, sunset aperitivo or a full dinner, this neighbourhood charmer meets you there with a happy 'ciao'.

AND ... There's $10 antipasti at the bar from 5pm to 7pm.
