The Chippendale gallery scene may be flourishing, but eating options are still few and far between. NG Gallery is doing its bit for the cause with a simple cafe-style eatery alongside its regular exhibitions. The surrounding aesthetics may win out over the food here and there - an entree of celeriac and manchego cheese fritters lacked punch and direction; and a nicely cooked piece of kingfish was let down by a somewhat soggy Tuscan salad. But things look up with vodka and beetroot-cured salmon with pickled beets, pretty on the plate and cleverly balanced by the crunch of hazelnuts and creamy dollops of labna. A slow-roasted lamb shoulder is tender and fragrant, the flavours pushed with the addition of garlic, chilli, flash-fried curry leaves and green cardamom. A chocolate and hazelnut cremino - its burnt shell of silky soft meringue hiding layers of gorgeously rich caramel fudge ice-cream - is undoubtedly the highlight of the meal.
