Mockingbird

This gorgeous-looking cocktail bar never seems as busy as some of its near neighbours on Fitzroy Street, but it deserves to be. Swept up in the Art Deco extravagance of the George building, it charms with lush velvet, Japanese artwork and vintage glassware. The beer and wine lists are brief and include Mockingbird lager, a dry, Asahi-style house brew, and a fruity, refreshing house pinot grigio. Six variations on the espresso martini dominate the cocktail list, but requests from further afield are welcome. Service is friendly, but can lag on occasions. The bill somehow feels more welcome when it arrives in an old French cigar tin.
