Mona Vale Hotel

13/20

Modern Australian$$

The Mona Vale Hotel's 'Balinese-style' beer garden is a wonderful venue. Its hefty tables support the robust and varied dishes (think Cajun, Moroccan, Sichuan) the bistro offers. A special of confit of duck with pear, spinach and a leek and potato galette would be well respected at a much more upmarket establishment. Alas, the sirloin rib, while of Flintstone dimensions, was tough, and its accompanying barbecue-flavoured, beer-battered chips an unwelcome innovation. Desserts of the day of sticky date and chocolate self-saucing pudding with ice-cream provided a nostalgic treat.
