Mr Hive Kitchen & Bar

14.5/20

Modern Australian$$

In the space that housed Gordon Ramsay's Maze restaurant, Mr Hive offers a relaxed menu in a comfortable timber-panelled setting. Chef John Lawson has been here since the Maze days. This menu has the kind of broad appeal and finesse you'd expect from an international hotel restaurant. Start, perhaps, with roasted scallops on a bed of cauliflower puree with toasted wild rice, or tender organic rabbit with olives, almonds and brown butter. For mains, beef Wellington is whopping and wondrous - even better with a side of marvellously crisp hand-cut chips. Or try a smart and simple roasted saltbush lamb served with roasted baby tomatoes, white-bean puree and black olive jus. Service is friendly, if at times hesitant (with staff perhaps unsure whether you're up to entree or main). The signature chocolate 'bar' dessert with salt, caramel, peanuts and peanut ice-cream is worthy of your undivided attention.
