This is Janani's third incarnation. Their fourth - a move to Strathfield - is planned for early 2013. The Sri Lankan sweets are gone. But the stringhoppers (steamed rice vermicelli mats) are still superior, served with a bowl of hodi (soft diced vegetables in turmeric and spiced coconut milk gravy) and fresh pol sambol (grated coconut, lime and chilli). Okra curry, tangy and tomatoey, and brinjal (eggplant) fried curry, oily, dark and strongly flavoured with roasted spices, are good accompaniments. Meat lovers will welcome kothu, a fry-up of sliced roti, vegetables and curried chicken or lamb.
