New Lots

You'll find New Lots (named after the last stop on a Brooklyn train line) in the industrial backblocks of South Melbourne, but there's nothing scrappy about this corner cafe with its white subway tiles, communal table and counter seating flanking the floor-to-ceiling windows. The menu is an ode to NYC with hefty sandwiches, dawgs and eggs (try the Flatbush, poached, with Spanish salami, salsa, and Sriracha chilli). The Supreme coffee is rich, with a smooth soft finish and a pleasing zing in the middle, not unlike the lemon-curd centre of a house-made 'duffin' (doughnut meets muffin).
