New Star

Modern Asian

There’s nothing new about New Star and therein lies the appeal. Across the road from Woolies in a small, time-worn arcade, it’s a rough-around-the-edges spot with timber tables, each topped with a tissue box, cutlery and condiments. The epic menu features Asian classic hits, including Malaysian and Thai, but with a focus on Vietnamese dishes, including fragrant, warming pho bo, beef noodle soup, with the requisite side of fresh herbs to add to taste. Crisp-skinned chicken with tomato rice is a hit, too, and spongy fish cakes have a feisty chilli kick. Service is swift and gracious, a perfect fit for this low-key local favourite.
