Orient East

Malaysian$$

It’s not exactly Petaling Street, KL, but this split-level hotel restaurant, decorated with vintage Asian advertising imagery, is bringing some of the flavours of Malaysia to St Kilda Road’s wage slaves. The menu mixes hawker favourites (roti chanai, satay) with room-service standbys (angus beef burger, club sandwiches) and Asian fusion dishes (braised gammon with pepper praline and papaya salad). Best bites include bouncy bao stuffed with roast pork or soft-shell crab and so-wrong-yet-oh-so-right chicken crackling with Korean chilli honey and peanuts. Desserts go the full East-West mashup, like banana fritter sundae with rocky road and salted caramel.
