Pastizzi Cafe

Italian

Famous for its flaky Maltese pastry namesakes, which are served up in 14 savoury and sweet fillings ($18 scores a mixed dozen), Pastizzi is one of Newtown's busiest daytime eateries, which makes the comparative anonymity of its dinner menu a culinary crime. The extensive pasta selection is utterly satisfying, including a rich, molten bechamel brick masquerading as lasagne. Mains are a toss-up between chicken and veal served with crisp vegetables and velvety sauces that exceed expectations (white wine and mushroom is a favourite). Dessert pastizzi include chocolate and ricotta or cherry cheese, but opt for those and you'd miss the superlative tiramisu and chocolate-drenched panna cotta.
