Pho 236

Vietnamese

This ain’t no disco. It ain’t no country club either. This is Pho 236: a utilitarian space of mottled-brown tiles and bare beige walls that’s long been the Newtown hipster’s sentimental favourite. Expect pho for the Western palate, with the broth lacking that rich, spiced sweetness. But the chicken version - which wins most popular - is full of vegies and will please fussy eaters who aren’t keen on the bird’s ‘brown bits’. Soups aside, the laminated menu features an array of cheap and tasty Vietnamese dishes, and there aren’t many nights when the place isn’t full. Service is efficient if a little weary. BYO cheap bottle of riesling.
