Italian

This spot is rumoured to have been a favourite haunt of Bob Hawke in his drinking days and, more recently, the scene of drag performances, Latin dancing and the odd stabbing. The latest incarnation is much more promising as the Phoenix gets into live music in its 280-capacity band room and returns to its pub roots in the front bar and dining area. Laid-back punters come for the music or to catch up over a drink and a snack from the simple but good Middle Eastern-influenced menu (think grilled haloumi and garlicky chicken wings). The wine list adds a couple of Lebanese labels to the mix while cocktails steer a safe course.

This Brunswick pub, once the union-owned RJ Hawke Hotel, has been reborn as a live music venue, Middle Eastern restaurant and bar. It attracts premier electronica and indie-flavoured acts and, as a bonus, there's an interesting drinks list. Live music : Wed-Sun.
